Blinking Lights and Other Revelations – frontman E’s 2005 masterpiece about
his parents’ deaths and sister’s suicide – was always going to be difficult
to follow. E has taken the best course and changed tack, delivering a set of
songs about desire through the persona of the dog-faced boy from 2001’s
Souljacker album, who he imagines to have grown up as a “dignified old
werewolf”. This provides the basis for several fruity garage romps. “Darling,
don’t fear me,” he urges as the beast closes in on Lilac Breeze, while Fresh
Blood’s vampire-like lust sees him actually howling like a werewolf. However,
the album’s heart lies in a clutch of songs exploring the “dreadful, intense
want” of love, described in the superb The Longing as a “pressure on my
chest”. My Timing Is Off has a lovely, bittersweet melody to match its
subject matter. In The Look You Give That Guy, E confesses to being “nothing
much” while craving for the look she gives another. The garage rock is fun,
but the mesmeric admissions of loneliness and failings make this one to

The Reigning Sound was born in Memphis, TN. Its daddy was a Flash & The
Memphis Casuals 45 and its mother a Barbara Pittman single. Life was not easy
for this musical what-not. Kids shunned it for its rock`n’roll sensibility
and obvious lack of polished shtick. In true stepchild fashion though, the
band continued to develop a unique sound all it’s own that didn’t really
focus on any of the preconceived genres. Within weeks they found their
audience and were shakin’ down the house at clubs all over town. “Hail, Hail
Rock ‘n’ Roll and ~censored~ your prefab garage” appears to be some sort of battle
cry for them. This from their leader Greg Cartwright whose previous bands The
Oblivians & Compulsive Gamblers were so closely linked to the “Garage Punk”
stereotype of ten years ago. “We were never really like most of the other
bands” says Greg.” I covered R&B, gospel or country songs with absolutely no
regard for any 60’s aesthetic or sound, I just enjoyed finding an obscure
song and breathing some new life into it.” This same instinct for a truly
inspired cover or a genius original can be found in the Reigning Sound. Greg
is aided by bass player Jeremy Scott, organist/guitarist Alex Greene and
drummer Greg Roberson. The first album, which is on SFTRI, showed Greg’s
talent for crafting great moody soundscapes but “Time Bomb High School”
their new record on In The Red, shows you the full spectrum of their dynamic
live show. Catch them this summer on their West coast tour with the Hives and
see what it’s all about

Roky Erickson & The Aliens I Think Of Demons
Debut album after being released from prison, his first work after the 13th floor elevators disbanded, well worth a listen, and reading up about him. Very interesting guy.
“Roky’s catalog is sometimes a maze of different versions and inferior recordings, but one may find this to be a suitable overview of his 80s material, most of which is mind-bogglingly hooky and energetic for a rocker of his age and psychic history. His obsession with demons, aliens, and other horror trappings is more of a charm than a crutch; however, if you’re not into it, making it through song titles like “I think of Demons,” “I Walked With A Zombie,” “Don’t Shake Me Lucifer,” and “Creature with the Atom Brain” will not endear you to the man’s particular world view. But if you are into that, or can simply stomach it, you’ll be rewarded with hooks whose simplicity defies logic, and punk-esque energy which defies the age and multiple institutionalizations of its creator.
If you’ve ever wondered what becomes of 60s garage rockers who can continue to turn out great tunes while acts like the Pretty Things and the Flamin’ Groovies may disappoint now, or if you wonder where artists like Robyn Hitchcock, Julian Cope, and even (sometime collaborators) the Butthole Surfers draw their inspiration from, look no further than Roky.
